The
Tunneling Optical Matrix Switch is a new telecommunications
switching component. Based on optical tunneling effects, it is
fast, simple to manufacture, and low in cost. Its small
footprint allows very high density arrays. A 4 x 4 array is
shown in the picture (at right). Designed for operation at
1550 nm, it interfaces to standard "vee" groove (silicon) fiber
arrays directly, thus simplifying integration. Custom
